Description:
Small size, stocky and pale plover with fine black bill. White hind collar and usually small, well-defined patches on sides of breast. Upperparts pale and sandy. Legs usually appear blackish, but may be tinged brown or be olive-yellow. Male has rufous cap and black eye-stripe and forecrown.
Distribution:
Uncommon passage migrant through western Gilgit-Baltistan, absent from Hunza, Nagar, Astore and Baltistan. Mostly prefers sparsely vegetated mud flats or sandy banks of wetlands, lakes, streams and also grasslands. In the areas occurs up to 3000m.
Behavior:
Sometimes probes in wet sand and mud and frequently feeds by foot-trembling. Usually in small flocks of up to 20-30 birds. May spend all daylight hours feeding, at least on spring migration stopovers. Takes mainly insects, such as beetles and flies, also crustaceans, molluscs and spiders; in brackish and saltwater, chiefly crustaceans, polychaete worms and molluscs.
